Artwork in the hotel

New Throughout the rooms and corridors you will find contemporary Icelandic artwork, some of which is for sale. It is our goal to introduce you to our best and most promising artists by exhibiting their work and sharing images of their work on our website.

Hulda Vilhjálmsdóttir was born on the 6th of June 1971 in Reykjavík. Her parents are Vilhjálmur Ásmundsson, mason and María Sigursteinsdóttir, housewife. As a child, Hulda showed a talent in drawing and painting. Her father encouraged her and gave her the freedom needed for developing her artistic skills. They would often visit art exhibitions together and purchase art and architecture magazines for which they shared a passion.

Hulda graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of the Iceland Academy of the Arts, in the spring of 2000. She has exhibited widely since then. Hulda describes herself as a ‘researcher’ in painting – exploring new things and leaving some others behind. Iceland is her main subject: it’s nature, it’s people, their inner and outer lives.

Some thoughts on my artistic process

First I sketch pictures and shapes and at times I take photographs or see something in a book, on the TV, a particular colour – all of this influences my work.

Like the poem I wrote:

“the boy in town said my mother.
the men pass by said my father”.
now I am (painting)
from my strange behaviour
with my strange stroke
with an old brush

the forms are loose and lines flow
like the Icelandic winds
which are loose and run around on
the island.

– Hulda Vilhjálmsdóttir

I mostly paint on canvas, I use quality frames and my canvas of choice is linen and cotton. I prepare with three layers of gesso. Then I paint.

Hulda has started 4 galleries and published 3 books of poetry. She lives and works in Reykjavík, Iceland.
